Description |
BBC Profile:
In this seat's main predecessor, Glasgow Springburn, Michael Martin never polled less than 50% of the vote after taking the seat for Labour in 1979.
In October 2000 Michael Martin was elected Speaker of the House of Commons.
The current seat of Glasgow North East was created in 2005 and included nine wards from Glasgow Springburn and three wards from Glasgow Maryhill.
Martin resigned as Speaker and MP in June 2009 in the wake of his handling of the MPs' expenses controversy. A by-election was held on 12 November and Labour's Willie Bain won the seat comfortably with an 8,111 majority over the SNP. Turnout was the lowest for any by-election in Scottish history at just 33%.
There are no boundary changes affecting this seat.
This seat extends out towards East Dunbartonshire and contains some of the toughest estates in Glasgow, around Springburn.
Dennistoun has some more attractive areas and is home to a number of young professionals and students.
