Description |
BBC Profile:
Nearly three decades after East Kilbride was designated a new town, the resulting population growth forced the creation of a new parliamentary constituency centred on the town and its hinterland in 1974.
Adam Ingram inherited the seat in 1987. His majority reached a peak of 17,384 in 1997.
The seat was redrawn and renamed in 2005 and the new seat of East Kilbride, Strathaven and Lesmahagow incorporated three wards from the old Clydesdale seat. Adam Ingram won the new seat with a majority of 14,723 over the SNP.
There are no boundary changes affecting this seat.
Most constituents are found in the East Kilbride new town to the north of the constituency. The seat stretches south to take in large parts of rural South Lanarkshire.
East Kilbride is one of the more successful new towns. It has grown from a sleepy village of 2,500 to a large town of 75,000. The town is characterised by low unemployment and a highly skilled workforce.
A high proportion of the seat's workforce is employed in manufacturing, with a host of engineering, printing and textile companies surviving alongside new high-tech firms.
Strathaven is a small market town with a ruined castle. It grew as a textiles town in the 18th and 19th centuries. Lesmahagow is a small town which grew around a 12th century priory.
