Democratic incumbent Shimkus, after having been removed from the Democratic primary ballot, waged a write-in campaign for the seat. As of Friday, April 25th, the unofficial count has him losing to Murphy for the Democratic nomination.
No Republican filed for the GOP primary and both Shimkus and Murphy ran write-in campaigns for the GOP nomination. As of 4-25, Shimkus has won this primary according to unofficial counts. In all likelihood, Shimkus will accept this nomination.
If the current leaders become the nominees, essentially this is a general election between two Democrats. Shimkus has stated he will continue to caucus with Democrats and remain registered as a Democrat.
