Description |
The first primary between Helstoski and Baer was held on June 6th, 1976. Helstoski was under investigaton by the federal government during the first half of 1976 and was indicted the Thursday before the June primary. Despite an indictment, Helstoski emerged victorious by a margin of 1669 votes (but only a win of 106 votes before absentees were counted)
But controversies involving absentee ballots from Hudson County, which broke to Helstoski by a 1642-79 margin caused a legal issue.
Baer sued and alleged fraud. In August 1976, Superior Court Judge John Marzulli voided the June 6th primary and ordered that a new primary election be held on September 21st.
