Description |
While the Tories won the 1807 election under the Duke of Portland, ill health hampered his ability to govern and Chancellor Perceval was effectively prime minister since the election. The Duke suffered a stroke in October 1809 and officially handed the premiership to Perceval, and died at the end of the month.
Perceval himself was dead by the next election when he was murdered in the lobby of the House of Commons. He is still the only UK prime minister to be assassinated.
