It's easier to forgive a blatantly racist candidate in the past when that person's overall campaign focused on other issues (like Woodrow Wilson). Candidates who made racism central to their campaign (like Horatio Seymour, Thomas Hendricks, or John Calhoun) are harder to forgive because without the racism they didn't have as much to say about policy.

To be sure, Wilson's eradication of the hundreds of African American federal employees was identical to what Stoner would have done. This policy of Wilson's shouldn't be forgotten but at least Wilson had some other ideas that were good/palatable.
