Upon Thatcher's withdrawal from the leadership contest, Major and Hurd entered to oppose Heseltine. While Major received only a plurality on the second ballot and would have generally advanced against Heseltine on a third and final ballot, Heseltine joined Hurd in withdrawing from the race following the second ballot.
