Description |
While Thatcher received a clear majority of Conservative MPS, she fell short of the 15% margin necessary for outright victory. While initially pledging to proceed to a second ballot, Thatcher dropped out of the leadership contest after consulting with her Cabinet and addressing the likelihood she would lose a second ballot. Two Thatcher supporters, John Major and Douglas Hurd, entered the race after her announcement.
