Description |
Date of election speculative. Spaight was originally nominated to run for the state house in the county as a whole, but he withdrew from that race to challenge Stanly, who was considered to be a weak candidate.
Spaight never forgave the Stanly family for this race. Stanly's majority came from free blacks, who solidly supported Stanly and provided about 50 of his votes. Spaight worked from this point forward to eliminate the right of free blacks to vote.
