Description U.S. Senator Langer narrowly defeated U.S. Representative Aandahl.

William Langer was a controversial politician throughout his career. He was a leader of the Non-Partisan League movement, and in his Senate votes, he supported Democrats as often as he supported Republicans. Langer said in early 1952, "I vote for a good bill and against a bad bill, regardless of who sponsors it."

Aandahl opposed Langer on the basis that a Republican Senator should not support the policies of the Truman administration. In the presidential nomination contest of 1952, Aandahl supported Robert A. Taft.

North Dakota Republicans fought a serious battle in this primary. Republican regulars wanted to remove the Non-Partisan League men from their elected ranks, including Langer and U.S. Rep. Usher Burdick.

Langer won a narrow victory. Aandahl led in the earliest precincts to report, but Langer took the lead by the time 10% of the vote was counted. Urban areas, which had not supported Langer in previous races, voted for him in this primary.

At this time, the Republican nomination was considered to be tantamount to election. Aandahl therefore decided to continue his campaign into the general election, running as an independent.
