Description |
Despite the 1963 House having a 51-48 Democratic majority, seven Democrats, mostly of Eastern Washington, joined a unified Republican Caucus to elect conservative Democratic Rep. William S. Day as speaker over the incumbent, liberal Seattle Rep. John L. O'Brien. While O'Brien retained leadership of the majority Democratic Caucus, Republican leader Dan Evans became de facto majority leader as the key broker in the governing coalition. He would use this influence to his advantage in defeating liberal Democratic Gov. Al Rosellini for a third term in 1964.
