Description |
Knowland, the incumbent Republican, won the Democratic primary using the state cross-filing procedure.
McKinnon argued that since the Democrats would control the next Senate, California could not afford to have two Republican Senators. He also argued that Knowland tried too hard to be the Senator from Formosa and not hard enough to be the Senator from California.
On primary day, a record number of voters went to the polls. Knowland won all counties but one, gaining the most votes recorded up to that time for any candidate in a primary election in California.
