Presidential Electors were chosen by the legislature. Before the balloting began, the state house and assembly both passed resolutions that no member of the legislature be chosen as a Presidential Elector. The two houses cast separate ballots, and to the amazement of the journalists present, both houses gave a majority of their votes to the same 12 men. They were:
Jesse Woodhull, Orange
Edward Savage, Washington
Johannis Bruyn, Ulster
William Floyd, Suffolk
Abraham Ten Eych, Rensselaer
John Bay, Columbia
David Van Ness, Dutchess
Samuel Clark, Saratoga
Abraham Yates Jr., Albany
Volkert Veeder, Montgomery
Stephen Ward, West Chester
Samuel Osgood, New York
The Electors met in Poughkeepsie to cast their electoral votes.
