Description The Clintonians, who controlled the NY Assembly on joint ballot (although the Federalists controlled the Assembly), were offended when the Virginia legislature appointed Electors to vote for a Virginian for President.

When the legislature assembled in late 1812 to appoint the Presidential Electors, the Madison legislators first proposed that the Electors be chosen by district. The DR Caucus met and appointed a slate of 29 Clinton Electors. The Federalists, who were a major force in the legislature at the time, were offended they did not receive any of the electoral slots, so they offered their own slate. The legislature voted as seen here to elect the "Coalition" slate of Electors, pledged to DeWitt Clinton.

Names of the NY Electors in 1812: Joseph C. Yates, Simeon De Witt, Archibald McIntire, John C. Hogeboom, Gordon S. Mumford, Jacob Delamontagnie, Philip Van Cortlandt, John Chandler, Henry Huntington, John Woodworth, David Boyd, Cornelius Bergen, Chauncey Belknap, Joseph Perine, John Dill, David Van Ness, Robert Jenkins, Michael S. Vandercook, George Palmer Jr., James Hill, William Kirby, Henry F. Yates, Thomas F. Hubbard, John Russell, James S. Kip, Jotham Jayne, Jonathan Stanley Jr., William Burnet, and George Rosecrantz.
