| Description |
The Republican Party won a key victory in the U.S. Senate elections of 2002. Just before the election, one Republican Senator switched his affiliation to Independent (aligned with the Democrats), which gave the Democrats control of the Senate. Then right before the election, one Democratic Senator died and was replaced by a member of the Independence (Reform) Party. In the election, the Republican Party picked up a net of one Democratic seat and the seat held by the Independence Senator. As a result, the new Senate stood 51R, 48D, and 1I.
New Senators: Pryor (D-AR), Chambliss (R-GA), Coleman (R-MN), Talent (R-MO), Sununu (R-NH), Lautenberg (D-NJ, returning), Dole (R-NC), Graham (R-SC), Alexander (R-TN), and Cornyn (R-TX).
Aggregate nationwide totals for U.S. Senate races of 2002:

Democratic 19,849,850 - 46.1
Libertarian 860,726 - 2.0
Independent 301,464 - 0.7
Reform 221,668 - 0.5
