| Description |
The U.S. Senate elections of 1998 were a draw. Because they were held in the middle of the impeachment of President Clinton, and the Republican leadership proclaimed before the election that they would gain a number of seats, the election was perceived as a nominal Democratic victory. Although the Democrats won the national vote of 1998 by a 50-47 margin, the Republicans took the lead in the aggregate vote for the first time in four decades. The Senate remained at 55R, 45D.
