The Republican Party added to their 1994 gains in the U.S. Senate elections of 1996. They won 21 races to 14 for the Democrats, for a net GOP gain of three. The new Senate stood at 55 R, 45 D.
New Senators: Sessions (R-AL), Hutchinson (R-AR), Allard (R-CO), Cleland (D-GA), Durbin (D-IL), Roberts (R-KS), Brownback (R-KS), Landrieu (D-LA), Collins (R-ME), Hagel (R-NE), Torricelli (D-NJ), Smith (R-OR), Wyden (D-OR), Reed (D-RI), Johnson (D-SD), and Enzi (R-WY).
