Description The Republican Party won a dramatic victory in the U.S. Senate races of 1994 as a part of the national re-alignment that year. The GOP picked up eight seats from the Democrats, and the day after the election Sen. Shelby (D-AL) switched to the Republican Party - for a new breakdown of 52 Republicans and 48 Democrats. In terms of the nationwide popular vote, the 51-45% victory by the Republican Party was the widest margin for the GOP since 1972.
