Republican nomination
The Republican district convention met in Durham on 5/12/1896 and nominated Settle for a third term unanimously (Raleigh News & Observer, 5/13/1896).
Populist nomination
The Populist district convention was held in Durham on 9/17/1896. The delegates were divided between supporters of Dalby and those who did not want to sponsor a nominee. Dalby won on the first ballot, after which the minority faction bolted but decided not to take further action (Raleigh News & Observer, 9/19/1896; Oxford Public Ledger, 9/25/1896).
