Description |
Warrington is known to many because of the IRA bombing of its shopping centre in which two children were killed. This seat, which includes the entire town centre, is largely made up of commuter villages along the M56 and A56 south of the Mersey. Most of the seat's middle-class population lives south of the Manchester Ship Canal in suburbs like Stockton Heath, Appleton and Grappenhall. The Liberal Democrats do well here in local elections but it provides the main Conservative strength in general elections. A more even battle between Labour and the Conservatives can be found west of Warrington in Great Sankey and Penketh, which have seen the growth of private housing estates in recent decades. There is some industry in the seat - mainly in chemicals and service - but it generally consists of quiet residential areas. It is a more middle class constituency than its northern neighbour and as such has more of a tendency to swing with the Conservatives. The party won the first two elections, following the constituency's creation, from remnants of Runcorn in 1983. But it swung to Labour in 1992 and has remained there since.
