Description The Wavertree constituency was a redrawn 1995 and is made up of the bulk of the former Liberal Democrat seat of Mossley Hill (which is held held by David Alton) and Broadgreen, where Labour MP Terry Fields was expelled for his support of Militant. In 1992 Fields stood as an Independent Labour candidate in Broadgreen, polling 6,000 votes but coming behind official candidate, Jane Kennedy. In 1997, without this distraction, she was able to increase her vote by over 23%, giving her a majority of almost 20,000. But the original Wavertree which was abolished in 1983 had always been a Conservative seat - from 1945 till 1979 when David Alton took it for the Liberals. Indeed the Liberal Democrats still win well in local council elections and this was one of the few places where local election success was translated into national support for the party. This is the eastern part of the city, encompassing terraces near the centre and upmarket suburbs like Childwall. It is largely white with a significant Jewish community. Almost 41% of the unemployed here are long-term jobless. Of those in work, 16.4% are in health and social work related occupations. In 2001 Jane Kennedy's majority went down to 12,319, but remains at 38.3%.
