Description |
A mixed residential and industrial constituency, Garston includes some of Liverpool's docks and the city's old industrial heartland, much of which was devastated by the recession in the early 1980s. It elected Labour's Maria Eagle with a majority of 18,000 in 1997 and returned her again in 2001 with a majority of 12,500. Perhaps the most socially and economically diverse of all the Liverpool constituencies, it has a history of being a volatile swing seat - it was Tory as recently as 1979. But it is now the Liberal Democrats who are in second place. Garston's borders on three sides are the River Mersey, the green belt at the southern edge of the city and the M62. The border on the fourth side runs almost down Queens Drive. Garston contains some of the most desirable and expensive housing in Liverpool, in the Woolton and Allerton areas, and has the highest rate of owner-occupation in the city - almost twice as high as in neighbouring Riverside, according to the 2001 Census.
