Description Denton and Reddish was formed in 1983 from the strongest Labour-supporting elements of the old Stockport North and South. This enabled the remaining Stockport seat to go Conservative in 1987 although it was recaptured by Labour in 1992. Andrew Bennett has represented Denton and Reddish since 1983 and has a massive 45.6% majority, though numerically smaller than in 1997. The well-known, long-time chairman of the Environment Select Committee (1995-2001) is now Chair of the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister's Housing, Planning, Local Government and the Regions Select Committee. Denton and Reddish joins the borough of Stockport and Tameside. Reddish lies north of Stockport on the other side of the M60. Denton is in Tameside, to the north east, and contains also the settlements of Audenshaw and Dukinfield. The constituency has a 97% white population, 71% owner-occupation and 12% local authority renting, as well as a larger proportion of skilled manual workers compared with professional and managerial occupations. Labour MP Andrew Bennett is standing down, to be replaced as Labour's candidate by another Andrew Gwynne, a Tameside councillor.
