Description Both Blackpool seats had been consistently Tory since their creation - in the case of Blackpool South since 1945. Even in 1983 their majority was in five figures. But by 1997 a combination of demographic, social and boundary changes - the addition of three Labour-inclined wards in 1995 - enabled former Gordon Marsden, to win the seat with a majority of more than 11,600 votes. Blackpool is known above all as a seaside resort; some would say Britain's premier resort, with its Tower, Golden Mile, Pleasure Beach illuminations, tram and funfair. Tourism is the main employer - it has the highest proportion nationally of people in the hotel and catering trade (13%). But tourism, even in Blackpool, is seasonal and unemployment here is above the national average. Much of the housing is either terraced or semi-detached and there is a strong private rented sector (20%). Labour MP Gordon Marsden has a majority of more than 21%.
