Description After beating establishment candidate former Rep. Bob Franks in the primary, Republican nominee and Jersey City Mayor Bret Schundler was completely unable to repair the deep rift in his party in time for the general election.

That interparty resentment of Schundler coupled with his conservative views on issues like abortion led to an easy victory by Woodbridge Mayor Jim McGreevey. Like his two immediate predecessors, McGreevey won election to office on his second statewide campaign, after narrowly losing the first race in 1997 against then Governor Whitman.

On August 12, 2004, Jim McGreevey admitted to an extramarital affair with a man, and that he would resign on November 15, 2004.
