Republican nomination
The Republican district convention met in Lexington on 4/17/1930. The delegates unanimously nominated Spencer after J.T. Prevette declined to be a contender for the nomination (Raleigh News & Observer, 4/17/1930).
Democratic nomination
The Democratic district executive committee met in Asheboro on 10/3/1930. Rep. Hammer had been the party's nominee in the general election, not having garnered a primary opponent. Lambeth had intended to run against Hammer in the primary, but Democratic officials arranged a higher paying job for Lambeth to entice him out of the race. The committee first nominated his widow, but she declined to run (she was the editor of the Asheboro Courier). The committee then nominated Lambeth unanimously on the second ballot (Greensboro Daily News, 10/4/1930).
