Description |
Term start due to Senator-Elect's delay.
The Illinois legislature was deadlocked for months. The first ballot was taken on 1/20/1909. On most early ballots, Sen. Hopkins led with 75 of the 102 needed for an election. U.S. Rep. Lorimer began a behind-the-scenes campaign for the seat and vowed not to allow his name to be presented until he had enough votes to win. On the 95th ballot on 5/26/1909.
Term End due to the Senate adopting a resolution declaring "that corrupt methods and practices were employed in his election, and that the election, therefore, was invalid." The Senate voted 55-28 on 7/13/1912 to remove Lorimer [NYT 7/14/1912].
