Description |
This was a bitterly fought runoff. The major issue was segregation of the public schools. Sanford favored a slightly more liberal approach to segretation than Gov. Hodges's plan. Lake stated during the runoff campaign that he would prefer to close all public schools rather than allow one to be desegregated. Sanford's margin of victory was quite a surprise.
