Richard Stanford died on 4/9/1816. This election was held to fill his vacancy in the last session of the Congress.
Dickens's major issue was that Craig had supported the bill to take the selection of Presidential Electors away from the people when the bill was passed in the legislature in 1811. His victory provided stunning evidence that the Federalist Party was not dead in North Carolina.
