Data Sources | Initially, Deputy Secretary of Veterans Affairs Hershel Gober was officially nominated for Secretary of Veterans Affairs on July 3, 1997. However his nomination was withdrawn on Oct. 24, 1997 after questions arose regarding allegations of "unwanted contact" with 2 women at VA events. He remained as Deputy Secretary for the remainder of the Clinton administration, briefly serving as Acting Sec. after West left office in 2000.
West was subsequently nominated in Dec. 1997, and designated Acting Sec. on Jan. 2, 1998. |
