The Democrats underestimated Harrison's popularity in Ohio. When he ran for Governor in 1820, he only carried the county named for him, placing a distant third statewide.
Turnout increased 30% from the 1832 election. Many voters did not understand they were voting for Electors rather than for Harrison and Van Buren. As a result, the returns for this race have been reported in two different ways. The actual votes were: Whig Electors 104,958; Democratic Electors 96,238; Van Buren 678; Harrison 459. Some sources show the direct voting for Van Buren and Harrison as 'scattering,' although I believe these numbers should be merged into the vote for the Electors (which is what I have done here).
