Description |
During the 1963 session of the legislature, Democrats had a numerical majority but the state house was governed by a coalition of Republicans and conservative Democrats, who elected conservative Democrat William Day as speaker, making John L. O'Brien the Democratic leader instead of speaker. O'Brien was only the de facto majority leader, as Republican leader Dan Evans was the acknowledged leader of the governing coalition.
