Description |
As part of a fusion campaign to place an ally of Governor Rockefeller in Gracie Mansion, the Republican and Liberal parties planned to endorse former Mayor Wagner to lead their tickets in 1973. Wagner was formally nominated by the Liberals, but he decided to withdraw from the race a day before the GOP convention.
The Liberal executive committee then met on April 12th and endorsed State Assemblyman Albert Blumenthal (64 votes to 7 for Herman Badillo), who later defeated a primary challenger on the same day that he failed to win the Democratic nomination.
