Description |
The original results for the race were:
Shelley-9301
Smith-6650
Stevens-1693
Smith contested the results but died on May 13,1882, before the House resolved the matter. Nevertheless, the House awarded him the seat in place of Shelley and declared the seat vacant on July 20, 1882. The totals below are the revised vote totals accarding to H.R. 47th Congress: 1st Session, Report #1522, p.14.
Smith is not listed as a member of the 47th congress nor is there a biography of him in the Directory.
A subsequent special election was held to fill the seat once the vacancy was declared.
