Paul Martin announced his resignation as party leader on January 23, 2006 following the Liberals' loss in the federal election.
First ballot results:
Ignatieff - 1,412 votes (29.33%)
Rae - 977 (20.29%)
Dion - 856 (17.78%)
Kennedy - 854 (17.74%)
Dryden - 238 (4.94%)
Brison - 192 (3.99%)
Volpe - 156 (3.24%)
Hall Findlay - 130 (2.70%)
Hall Findlay automatically dropped off the ballot and endorsed Stephane Dion. Volpe and Brison voluntarily dropped off the ballot and endorsed Bob Rae.
Second ballot results:
Ignatieff - 1,481 (31.58%)
Rae - 1,132 (24.14%)
Dion - 974 (20.77%)
Kennedy - 884 (18.85%)
Dryden - 219 (4.77%)
Dryden automatically dropped off the ballot and endorsed Bob Rae. Kennedy voluntarily dropped off the ballot and supported Stephane Dion.
Third ballot results:
Dion - 1,782 (36.99%)
Ignatieff - 1,660 (34.46%)
