North Carolina Manual, 1913. The certified statewide totals for the three contenders do not match the sum of the counties, which is Simmons 84,759; Kitchin 46,810; and Clark 16,265.
This nomination was originally planned to take place at the Democratic state convention. However, after one of the candidates (former Gov. Aycock) died, the convention was postponed two months. When it met on 6/6/1912, the delegates voted to hold a primary to nominate a candidate for US Senator.
