Description |
In what was touted as a competitive race, Assemblyman Scott Garrett, a pro-life conservative, faced off against Anne Sumers, an ex-Republican who attempted to claim the mantle of moderate Rep. Marge Roukema. Roukema declined to seek re-election to a 12th term after nearly losing her last two primaries to Garrett.
As the campaign progressed, Garrett was successful at brandishing Sumers as a liberal extremist, after messages she posted on an internet message board made her seem supportive of Afghanistan and revealed that she toyed with voting for Nader in 2000.
A last minute blitz of inflammatory anti-gun ads may have actually hurt the Democrat in this GOP district, as Sumers could not overcome a strong GOP year. What was supposed to be a close race turned out to be a blowout.
