Transfer Endorsements from Primary to General

Isn't the rule on endorsements that you can only endorse someone in the primary who you plan to endorse in the general election? If so, is it possible to make user endorsements from primaries transfer to the general election? Or is the rule that you can endorse someone in a primary over another candidate, but still support an opposing party's candidate in the general election (say, if I wanted endorse Chafee over Laffey in the GOP primary, but still support Whitehouse in the general election?)
