DescriptionOpposition party calling for democratic reforms in South Sudan. Party is led by the former SPLM Secretary General Pagan Amum and former Salva Kiir Presidential Adviser Rebecca Garang, daughter of South Sudan's John Garang, considered the father of the country. Party split from Kiir's SPLM in 2013.

Though the Former Detainees paid lip service to former vice-President Riek Machar's SPLM-IO [Sudan People's Liberation Movement-in-Opposition] insurrectionary movement during the Sudanese Civil War (Late 2013 to 2020), the FD declined to join the nine-party-cum-militia "South Sudan Opposition Alliance" when it was formed on February 16, 2018, citing its heavy involvement in violence [SPLM-Former Detainees (SPLM-FD)].
