Secularist party split off from the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement in 2011. Party strives to create a new nation within South Sudan free of religious influences. Party is led by a well-known rebel commander in South Sudan, Abdel Aziz al-Hilu.
SPLM-N (al-Hilu) is one of two party factions within its armed wing, the Sudan People's Liberation Army SPLA-North. Each faction is led by rival generals, often at odds with each other and the government [the other faction being the SPLM-N (Agar)]. Party is based in the states of Blue Nile and South Kordofan (Full acronym for party: SPLM-N al-Hilu).
