DescriptionCenter-right, secularist party founded by the Indonesian Armed Forces as Sekber Golkar (Joint Secretariat of Functional Groups) in 1964. Party assumed statist and corporatist stances when it became the ruling party during the 32-year "New Order" period implemented by Indonesia's 2nd president, Suharto. Golkar has always either been the reigning party or in a governing coalition (with the exception of a two year gap between 2014-16) since 1971. Golkar rallied behind Indonesia's current president Joko Widodo in 2019. Party has been chaired by Airlangga Hartarto since December 13, 2017 [Partai Golongan Karya (PGK); shortened to GOLKAR, aka Partai Golkar].
