DescriptionOne-time umbrella for four Islamist parties operating under the radar during the 32-year "new order" period promulgated by 2nd president Suharto. Suharto permitted only two parties (which included the PPP) and his own ruling party (Golkar) to make a go at political power in Indonesia. The PPP was in every governing coalition formed since 1971 to date, save two years (2014-2016). Upon Suharto's resignation on May 21, 1998, the PPP revealed itself full-fledged "Islamist," moderating its tone a decade later. The PPP has been led by Minister of National Planning Suharso Monoarfa since August 20, 2019 (Party uses the Kaaba in Mecca as its logo and symbol) [Partai Persatuan Pembangunan (PPP)].
