Radical left Marxist-Leninist Maoist Party once the centerpiece of the Communist Party of Pakistan (and known as the Communist Party of East Pakistan). Party's unusually close link to the Soviet Union brought about internal havoc when the East Bloc began to break apart in 1991. Party turned its focus on battling religious extremism.
