Description | Center-right opposition party which called for the adoption of a Westminster system of parliamentary democracy in Azerbaijan. Party was founded and led by physician and co-founder of the Movement for Democratic Reforms in the USSR, Lala Shevket. Shevket launched the party in protest after serving as Azerbaijan's Secretary of State from July 7, 1993 to January 13, 1994. Shevket ran for President in 2003, then organized the pro-democratization "Azadliq" Bloc in 2006, led by her Liberal Party, and consisting of the Popular Front Party and the Citizens and Development Party. The Liberal Party was shut down along with 27 others in 2023 after a new law came into effect on January 11, 2023 forcing all parties to have at least 5,000 provable members [Azərbaycan Liberal Partiyası (ALP)]. |
