Description | Leftist party founded by jurist and diplomat Shalva Natelashvili. Party did well in local councils between 1998 and 2002, in particular, in the capital of Tbilisi. Party however witnessed a precipitous decline after taking a stand against the "Rose Revolution" directed against President Eduard Shevardnadze in November 2003, which forced Shevardnadze's resignation on November 23, 2003 and brought in Mikheil Saakashvili, leader of the opposition United National Movement. As a consequence, support for the Labor Party dwindled significantly after its high point of 20 seats in 2003, falling to no seats at all since elections held October 1, 2012. Party presents itself as the only left-wing force in Georgia but moved to the right socially ahead of parliamentary elections held in 2020 by supporting the increasing role of the Georgian Orthodox Church in public life and the strengthening of the Georgian ethnic identity and traditional cultural values. Party consequently picked up a single seat in parliament and is set to try for more in elections in 2024 [Sakartvelos Leiboristuli Partia (SLP); საქართველოს ლეიბორისტული პარტია]. |
