Description | Sunni Muslim party affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood known as 'Al-Jama'a al-Islamiyya' (JI). Party was formed during the stay in exile in Beirut of Moustapha Siba'i, general supervisor of the Syrian Muslim Brotherhood. Party quickly took hard anti-Western, anti-Christian positions while spreading the message of Islam, and spearheaded a comparatively vicious militia as the Lebanon Civil War progressed, beginning in 1975. Party allied itself with the Ta'if Accords, which ended the Civil War in 1990, and assisted in the Syrian occupation of Lebanon. Party is led by its general secretary the general secretary Fayçal Mawlawi. |
