Description | Conservative, anti-Communist movement also known as the Chinese Nationalist Party, the largest opposition party in the Republic of China (Taiwan), and the largest legislative body in the Legislative Yuan. Party began in exile as the Xingzhong Hui, a revolutionary group founded in Honolulu, the Republic of Hawaii (before it became the state of Hawaii), on November 24, 1894. It was later reorganized by Sun Yat-sen on October 10, 1919 as the Kuomintang in the French Concession of Shanghai, and unified China under its banner in 1928. After its defeat at the end of 1949 in the second civil war between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party, the party moved its headquarters to Taiwan, where it remained Taiwan's predominant and ruling party until the first year of the 21st Century, when its leader Lien Chan was defeated by James Soong in a presidential election held on March 18, 2000. Party Chairman is the 7th Mayor of New Taipei City, Zhu Lilun [中國國民黨translated literally as Chinese Kuomintang]. |
