Description | Center-left ruling party founded by three-time prime minister Anerood Jugnauth, who split from MMM founder Paul BĂ©renger's coalition government in 1983. The MSM ruled the country from 1983 to 1995, from 2000 to 2003, then again beginning in 2014 after Anerood launched the LEPEP Alliance, which resulted in a landslide victory for this coalition, securing 47 of the elected seats, and another turn at the prime ministership. The MSM has won, alone or as part of a coalition, five of the eleven elections, and currently holds 40 out of 69 seats in the National Assembly. Party draws most of its support from the Indo-Mauritian majority. Anerood relinquished party leadership in 2003 to his son, Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, who succeeded his father as prime minister on January 23, 2017. [Mouvement Socialiste Militant (MSM)]. |
