Description | Hutu-led center-right, Christian-democratic party allied to the ruling Rwandan Patriotic Front. Party was founded by the former Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies Alfred Mukezamfura after the liberalization of Rwanda in 1990 by Hutu President and dictator Juvénal Habyarimana (assassinated in 1994; said to have been on orders from Rwandan Patriotic Front leader Paul Kagame, Rwanda's current Tutsi president). Party had allied itself with President Habyarimana until his assassination in 1994 spurred a massive murder spree of Tutsis and Hutu moderates by Hutu militias (called the Rwandan Genocide). Party began as the Christian Democratic Party (Parti Démocratique Chrêtien) but was forced to blur any links to religious dogmatism, changing its name in 2003 when party leadership was assumed by Agnes Mukabaranga, who's family was wiped out by militia members in 1994. Party retains a single seat in the 80-seat Chamber of Deputies [Parti Démocrate Centriste (PDC)]. |
