DescriptionParty History
The Party was formed in the wake of the Port Arthur tragedy in 1996.

Throughout the country, their State and Federal Governments and a biased media were betraying gun owners. With the exception of the Shooters Party in NSW, not one political Party listened to or represented the balanced views of gun owners. Gun ownership was instantly branded as undesirable and the traditional democratic right to possess firearms for any reason became a difficult to justify privilege. All gun owners had suddenly become the untrustworthy portions of society.

Very quickly, gun owners found allies in community sectors where individual rights of various recreational public land user groups had been taken away. Rallies in Hobart in front of Parliament House saw dissatisfied crowds of 10,000 and 12,000 on two occasions, but to no avail. It could be seen that Government was perpetrating the issue of loosing basic democratic rights on a broader scale on its citizens.

By 1997, ordinary citizens with concerns about basic rights such as aged care, affordable health facilities, traditional education standards, deteriorating law and order and sustainable environmental interests began joining Tasmania First Party. Membership climbed to 1,500 and male to female ratio was 50 – 50.

A question “ What problems do you see with the way Tasmania is being run and how would you fix it” was asked of all members. Responses were used to formulate policy.

Tasmania First Party was set to represent community attitudes and concerns and reflects a broad range of sound social and economic interests.

Vision for the future

Over the last 20 years we have all noticed the decline in our country’s living standards, lowering employment levels, a reduction in the quality of health care, and worsening law and order problems. Tasmania First will address these issues.

All policies will be formulated to reflect the views expressed by the majority of Tasmania’s citizens. For this reason all Tasmania First candidates will be allowed to have a conscience vote in Parliament on issues other than those referred to in the Party’s Constitution. Their vote will not always be dependent on party policy, but rather on what the constituents want. For this reason it is imperative that you inform your local branch on any matters that concern you. If you would like to attend a branch meeting to personally present your views, you would be made most welcome.

Tasmania First needs your input so that our policies, which are continually being updated, can reflect the real views and concerns of the Tasmanian people. With this type of arrangement we offer you the chance to help shape Tasmania’s future.

Tasmania First has many plans for rebuilding Tasmania’s future.

We aim to:

· Reduce our unemployment levels by creating and

expanding businesses.

· Improve our public services so that our citizens

receive the benefits.

· Expand our health systems for the benefit of all

Tasmanians.

· Redevelop our education systems to teach basic

principles and skills.

· Make our society a safer place by rebuilding our

legal system.

· Support and assist our primary industries to develop

and diversify.

An overview on how Tasmania First believes these ideals can be achieved, is available by contacting our State Office or your local branch.
